“The Cost of Survival
vs. the Value of Belonging”

We are pouring an excessive amount of money into temporary housing solutions that fail to address the root of the problem. The idea of creating permanent, integrated living spaces is admirable, but it’s unrealistic in practice.
For individuals who have spent decades surviving on the fringes of society, scraping by with minimal help, their mindset has been deeply shaped by these experiences. It’s not simply a matter of handing over the keys to a new lifestyle; the process of change requires something more foundational.
Six months in a dormitory-style environment won’t solve the problem either. For families who just need a short-term boost to reintegrate into society, this approach might work. However, for those who have been chronically homeless, this isn’t even a viable option. After six months, without permanent housing, the same individuals end up back on the streets. This cycle is not only ineffective but also a waste of resources.
The issue goes beyond just providing housing it’s about addressing the mindset of survival at any cost. For people who have been outcasts to society, their primary focus becomes self-preservation, often at the expense of community values. To break this cycle, we must invest in education and programs that teach them to care again not just for themselves but for the community around them. It’s about helping them rediscover their humanity and showing them they’re no longer outsiders.
This is where funding can be truly impactful. By focusing on education, life skills, and emotional reintegration, we can rebuild trust and foster a sense of belonging. Only then can we successfully integrate these individuals into our neighborhoods, where they can be accepted as brethren without fear of harm, disruption, or negative influences. The goal is not just to house people but to create community members who believe in their own worth and the value of being part of something greater.
Instead of wasting money on temporary fixes, let’s prioritize long-term solutions that focus on changing lives not just conditions. By addressing the roots of homelessness and fostering a sense of connection and purpose, we can pave the way for real change. It’s not just about survival; it’s about thriving together as a society.
